Pwnage = Relief????
When I get sniped from across the map on High Ground in a Team Slayer match on Halo 3, I usually get angry. I swear. I throw my controller. I basically have a sissy temper tantrum. Then I calm down, get smoked again, and repeat the process. But I never once have felt a sense of relief. You will never hear me say, “Thank god that's over!” after I get pummeled by someone far superior than I. According to a recent study however, the emotional response to being killed in an FPS or other action game might just induce the feeling of relief, even though you may not exactly realize that is what is going on. There is an article on Arstechnica.com that tells of a study using Finnish students. The study measured the emotional responses of the group when they played James Bond 007: Nightfire, and Super Monkey Ball 2. After comparing the two, they theorized that a gamer experiences a sense of relief when they are killed, because it eliminates the tension or stress of facing their next opponent.A very wordy, yet interesting read. Check the article out here!

MASSive EFFECTs to my psyche!
Review after review have sung the praises of Bioware's latest RPG, Mass Effect. Many have called it the best game to grace the XBOX 360 to date. Others have said it is the best RPG ever. Google any review, and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything but great things to say about this game. And so far with my experience in the ME universe, I can do nothing but agree.
With my self professed casual gamer status, I cannot compare ME to many of the other heavy hitters out there. While I would love to emerse myself in such games as Assassins Creed, Bioshock, COD4, etc., I simply don't have the time. I'm sure I'll eventually dabble in these games, but each purchase I make has to be calculated, and boy do I feel that I mad the right choice with ME!
My little review or analysis is nowhere near the level of something you'd get on IGN, or JOYSTIQ, and it's coming much, much later than everyone else. But give me a break man! I got a late start, but have become so wrapped up in the experience, that I felt I had to share.
This game is the balls! I have never in my life felt so involved in a game, or felt been so taken aback by the storyline. Every decision that I make is critical to the overall outcome, and it shows. I've played other RPG's that have claimed this, but ME really delivers. I started this game wanting to be all Billy Bad Ass, and be the ultimate Renegade. You know, kick puppies, swear at old ladies, etc. Just be a giant rebel. But as time has gone on, I couldn't help but find myself sympathizing with those who were in peril, or who needed advice. I also felt a connection to my teammates. I am their Commander, and I need to take care of my folks if they are to take care of me! So my attitude has drastically shifted to be a boy scout, more than a bully, and I think it has helped me love this game so much more!
If you like a good sci-fi story, you will love this game. If you've never played an RPG, in my opinion there is none better to start out with Read the reviews on some of the game sites out there to get a better idea of what to expect. They can give you an in-depth view of the game. But take it from an Average Joe who loves to play for thrill of it, this game really is amazing. Plus, any game where you get to knock out a nosey reporter, or make sweet, sweet love to an alien has to be money. Right?
